From Berlin with love

The three gentlemen of Stories From Shamehill needed a spot to record some new stuff. Water was rising in the west, so they had no choice but to seek higher ground. The train to the east was the solution. Not a bounty island with white beaches and sultry nights, but Berlin in November, with wet streets and dark days.
Exactly 35 years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, the guys found themselves in the eastern part of the German capital, where the past still leans heavily on the present. In the shadow of the iconic Funkhaus, they moved into Condor Recording Studios. Owner and producer Boris proved the ideal partner to translate their musical ideas into exciting new tracks.
The winning combination of band and producer formed the foundation for four songs, which you wouldn’t guess were created in an obscure Berlin. The yearning for warm days and Boris’ Latin American rhythms on the conga proved the ideal melting pot for the tropical ‘Kura Kera’. Put the needle in the groove and imagine Helena Christensen, arousing in the surf, like in the music video for Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’.
The hours without daylight in the studio and Helena’s delusions (or was there something weird in the Thai lunch?) turned the mood around. Madness took over, resulting in the neurotic, hypnotic ‘Pica Puta’. Dirty fuzz guitars, distorted organs and Boris’s alter ego – El Loco Bongó – led to this genuine titty twister.
With the cold sweat still on the back, calm returned somewhat and carefully peeked out through a crack in the darkened windows. Hip and happening Berlin passed by the eye. It appeared on the studio floor with the groovy ‘Romper Stomper’, which culminated in an ecstatic finale full of Christmas bell chimes, like a seismic orgasm of Linda Lovelace.
In the aftermath of this psychosis, they were thrown back in time. ‘Tears for Gears’ sounds like the soundtrack to a wild man’s ride, with the KGB on its heels through Cold War-era Berlin. A psychedelic Cossack choir as a reprise brought Stories From Shamehill back to their senses, amid 700 musicians who, together with the audience as a tribute to 35 years of the fall of the wall, transformed Berlin into the world’s most significant rock and roll stage. The title of the EP needed no further thought: “Einfach Umph!

De drie heren van Stories From Shamehill hadden ernstig behoefte aan een sfeervolle plek voor het opnemen van nieuw werk. In het westen rees het water, dus had het drietal geen andere keuze dan het hogerop te zoeken. De trein naar het oosten bracht uitkomst. Geen bountyeiland met witte stranden en zwoele nachten, maar het herfstige Berlijn in november, met natte straten en donkere dagen.
Exact 35 jaar na de val van de Berlijnse muur bevond het drietal zich in het oostelijke deel van de Duitse hoofdstad, waar het verleden nog steeds zwaar leunt op het heden. In de slagschaduw van het iconische Funkhaus werd intrek genomen in de Condor Recording Studios. Eigenaar en producer Boris (‘de Chileen’) bleek de ideale partner om opwindende muzikale ideeën om te zetten in concreetheid.
De gouden combinatie van band en producer vormde de basis voor vier nummers, waarvan je niet zou vermoeden dat ze zijn ontstaan in een duister Berlijn. De hunkering naar warme dagen en Boris’ Latijns-Amerikaanse ritmes op de conga bleken de ideale smeltkroes voor het tropische ‘Kura Kera’. Zet de naald in de groef en waan je Helena Christensen, krols in de branding kronkelend, zoals in de videoclip van Chris Isaak’s ‘Wicked Game’.
De uren zonder daglicht in de studio en de waanbeelden van Helena (of zat er soms wat raars in de Thaise lunch?) deden de stemming omslaan. De waanzin nam de overhand met het neurotisch, hypnotiserende ‘Pica Puta’ als gevolg. Vuige fuzzgitaren, overstuurde orgels en Boris z’n alter ego – El Loco Bongó – leidden tot deze onvervalste titty twister.
Met het koude zweet nog op de rug keerde de rust enigszins terug en werd voorzichtig door een kier in de verduisterde ramen naar buiten gegluurd. Hip and happening Berlijn trok aan het oog voorbij en deed op de studiovloer zijn intrede met het groovy ‘Romper Stomper’. Dat zich samen balde tot een extatische finale vol kerstklok geschal, als een seismisch orgasme van Linda Lovelace.
In een nawee van deze psychose werd het gezelschap teruggeworpen in de tijd. ‘Tears for Gears’ klinkt als de soundtrack bij een wildemansrit, met de KGB op de hielen door het Berlijn ten tijde van de koude oorlog. Een psychedelisch Kozakkenkoor als reprise bracht Stories From Shamehill weer bij hun positieven, te midden van 700 muzikanten die samen met het publiek als eerbetoon aan 35 jaar val van de muur, Berlijn transformeerden tot het grootste rock and roll podium van de wereld.
Over de titel van de EP hoefde niet meer te worden nagedacht: ‘Einfach Umph!’
